(Cont'd)

Once they arrived at Riza's apartment, she invited Roy to come on in.  Black Hayate, Riza's little puppy, jumped and wagged its tail, excited by the company.

"You're hurt." Riza noted, seeing the blood and cut in Roy's shirt.

"Oh, it's not deep, just a little scratch.  I'll be fine."

"We should still get it cleaned out."  She said, and went off to get some medical supplies.  She came back with hydrogen peroxide and had him lift his shirt.

"I really don't think it's that big of a deal."  Roy whined.

"It'll be a big deal when it gets infected," she scolded.  "Now quit being such a baby and let me see it!"

After thoroughly cleaning Roy's cut, she got up and started to head back towards the bedroom.  "I'm going to go get changed real quick, make yourself at home." Riza said with a faint smile.

"Take as long as you need."

Roy played with the puppy a bit while he waited.  There were still tons of boxes from when they had first moved out to Central that hadn't been unpacked lying around the room.  Roy wondered how permanent their stay would really be, and if she would ever have the chance to unpack it all.

He heard her go in for a shower, a very long shower.

When she finally came out, her hair was still wet, she was wearing loose pajamas, and it looked like she might have been crying.

"Are you alright?" Roy asked.

She nodded slightly.

"What's wrong?"  Roy patted the couch next to him, encouraging her to sit down.

"It's nothing," she replied, sitting down beside him.

Roy gently placed his arm around her shoulders.  "What's the matter?"

Riza's eyes began to tear.  "I can't get rid of it." She said brining her arms up to cover her chest.  "I can't wash away that feeling.  What he did… I still feel it."

"Did he…?" Roy couldn't finish; he felt like the rest of the question was stuck in his throat.

She shook her head.  "He just touched… but it hurt."  Unable to hold back the tears anymore, she started crying.

Roy pulled her in and hugged her, trying to comfort her as best he could.  He felt awful.  He wanted nothing more than to be able to just touch her and take away all the pain; to just absorb all the hurt she was feeling and relieve her.  But no such magic existed.  There was no science, no alchemy, no medicine that would let him just heal her.  He hated feeling so helpless.  He may have gotten there before it was too late, but this was still going to leave a scar.  Roy felt like he could cry with her.  His perfect diamond had a tiny nick in it now, and there was nothing he could do to fix it.

Hayate jumped up on the couch and laid his head on Riza's leg.  She stroked him behind the ear, and then returned to hugging Mustang.

"I'm sorry," she sniffled after she had finished crying.

"Don't be, it's ok."

"Thank you."

"You're welcome."

They continued to just sit there together, silently comforting one another.
--

Eventually, Hayate lifted his head to look at the couple.  Both of his humans were asleep, but the light was still on.  After a quick verification that neither Roy nor Riza were awake, the puppy jumped down off the couch and headed for the boxes.  He pushed one of the boxes over to the wall by the light switch.  With a bit of difficulty, he managed to climb up onto the box.  Standing on his hind legs, he swatted at the light switch.  He was just barely able to reach with his little paws, but managed to finally turn out the light.  Hayate paused to look around proudly, mommy would be so proud of him!  Once he was satisfied with his work, he hopped down off the box, climbed back up on the couch, and placing his head back in mommy's lap, fell asleep.

--

The next morning, Roy woke up to Hayate licking his face.  He pushed the dog away, "Stupid dog… Wait, dog?"  Roy opened his eyes to find himself on Riza's couch, with his Lieutenant sleeping, her head on his chest.  "What the…"  Then he remembered the previous night.  "We must have fallen asleep.  I really hope she's not mad when she wakes up."

Riza began to stir.  As she awoke she suddenly realized she felt someone under her!  She sat straight up.

"Morning, Lieutenant." Roy smiled at her.

Riza'a eyes flew open wide.  "What are you doing here!?"

"Calm down, nothing happened.  Do you remember last night?  We must have fallen asleep here on the couch."

She paused.  It all came flooding back to her.  "Oh, that's right.  But wait," she said suspiciously.  "If we both just fell asleep on the couch, then why aren't the lights on?"

They looked around, and spotted the box next to the light switch.

"How did that get there?"  Roy asked.

"Hayate must have moved it." She had seen her dog push the boxes before.

"Wait, are you saying your dog turned out the lights?"

"It's possible," she said as she began to stroke her puppy.  "He is a very smart dog."

"I'll say!"

"I'm sorry, sir.  I know this is a bit awkward, but if you want to use the shower you are more than welcome.  Towels are in the closet to the left.  I'll get breakfast started."

"Thank you."

While Roy was cleaning up, Riza made breakfast while going over all the events of the past 24 hours in her head.  "I can't believe I did that!  I kissed him!  Riza you idiot, what were you thinking!!"  She let out a heavy sigh.  How did things get so out of control?  The Colonel was probably right; she did have too much to drink that night.  Last night was such a mess!  She shouldn't have even been in the garden.  Why didn't she just go straight home?  If she had just gone home, she wouldn't have gotten the chance to kiss Colonel Mustang, and Dillume would never have had the opportunity to…

She glanced down at the floor.  Her eyes locked on a shadow.  A sudden ping of fear gripped her, as memories she would rather forget came rushing back.  *"I will always be watching you from the shadows."*  Pride's words rang clear in her head.  "We shouldn't be doing this.  I've got to get rid of him as quickly as possible.  And I have to keep him quiet.  We're not safe, not even here."

Just then, Mustang came out.  "Mmmm, that smells good."

Riza only smiled and served the food.  An awkward silence hung over the breakfast; Hawkeye was focused on her plate, and Roy couldn't think of anything to say.

"So, how are you feeling this morning?" he eventually blurted.

"I'm good, sir. Thank you."

Roy scowled.  That was the best conversation starter he had.  So he turned back to his breakfast with a sigh.

Once they were finished, Riza began to collect all the dirty dishes.  "You probably shouldn't stay much longer sir."

"Why not?"

"We shouldn't be doing this as it is," she was desperately trying to mask the stress in her voice.

"But we are… whether we cut it short or not won't change anything."

"It's not safe to carry it out any longer than we have to."  Now she was getting frustrated.

"What's with the sudden urge to get rid of me?"

Riza froze for a moment.  She couldn't tell him about Pride's threat.  *"…If you speak of this to anyone… Colonel Mustang and your other friends will not go unharmed."*  She forced Pride's voice out of her head.

"We both know we are being watched carefully.  I thought we had decided it best not to even meet with each other outside of work.  Isn't that why you hid in Havoc's hospital room when I came by to visit?"

"Yes, but they already know that we are together.  We can't change that now.  Why don't we just make the best of it?"

"Grrrrrr.  Catch a hint already, would you?!  Why can't you accept that this isn't a good idea and just go?"  Riza felt so tired.  After last night, arguing with the Colonel was too much.  She focused her attention on cleaning the dishes.

"Here, let me help you with those."  Roy said, as he got up to assist with the dishes.  "I'm not a freeloader you know."  He glanced down at her.  "Hey! What's with the surprised look?"

"Well, with the way you are in the office, sir…" she was grateful for the change in subject.

Roy scoffed.

"And how much paperwork do you have backed up on your desk sir?"

"I don't have any help anymore!  I've got to do it all by myself!  Yea, it's gonna get a little backed up!"

Riza smiled to herself, "At least he's not trying to discuss anything important."

Both were silent for a moment till eventually Roy spoke back up.

"Hey Lieutenant, about last night…"

"Spoke too soon." She thought with dismay.  "We shouldn't talk about last night, ever."  She put a bit of warning in her tone.

"I just have one question."

*sigh* "What?"

"Did you mean it?"

She froze.  "Mean what?" she asked trying to hide her embarrassment.

"You know what I'm talking about."

"I don't remember, like you said I was drunk."  She avoided eye contact.

"Hawkeye…"  He wasn't buying it.  Roy came up behind her, "Did you mean any of it?"

Riza took a deep sigh.  She remembered all of it, the hugging, the crying, the kiss, and the worst part was that it was wonderful.  She leaned back and let her head rest against his chest.  Roy smiled.  She didn't have to say a thing, he understood the answer: 'all of it'.  It was the answer he was hoping for.

Once they had finished the dishes, Roy made sure he had gathered all his belongings.  "Guess I should get going then."  He glanced back at her, "are you sure you're going to be alright?"

Riza smiled, "Yes sir.  I'll be alright.  Thank you."

Roy returned her smile.  They exchanged one last hug at the door, and he left.  Both of them braced against the tinge of pain they felt.  They wanted to be together, to be close, but now was not the time.  Now they had to keep their distance to try and keep enemy suspicion down.

The next day they both returned to work.  And both were dismayed and angered to discover that Dillume would receive no further reprimands for what he did.  However, in exchange for that neither of them would be charged with attacking a superior officer.  The injuries he had would have to be punishment enough.

"Hmph!" Riza thought.  "If I knew they were going to do that then I would have moved the shot in a bit.  That would have been justice!"

Roy glared at the document.  "You may think you're getting off scot-free, but just you wait!  When I become Fuhrer, you're the first thing I'll take care of!"

It wasn't fair.  But given their current situation, fair wasn't something they could really expect.  It was better for them to just accept the arrangement.  There wasn't anything they could do about it.  All they could do was live their separate lives and wait for the 'Promised Day'.

"I don't know exactly what will happen on the 'Promised Day'," Roy thought to himself.  "But afterwards things are going to change!  And then maybe we can finally be together.  Until then, take care my love."

Wow! I can't believe I finished all these in a little over a week!

Here is the fourth one finally. So, I guess this is where this part of the storyline ends. This has been great, but as they say "all good things must come to an end". Pretty much this leads back to Arakawa's plot. This occured in the vacant months leading up to the "Promised Day", after chapter 83.

Sorry about the unbearably cute and mushy ending, I couln't help it.

Thank you so much for reading, and don't worry I've got plenty more stories to come. =)

Wonderful. I love me some Royai, henceforth why it's canon in the fic I'm writing. Hayate's interlude was friggin' ADORABLE. But one question keeps nagging in my mind. I've watched both series, and vaguely remember Riza working as Bradley's assistant. Was that '03? And is this set in that series?
